This poem is in honor of my dad, “The Greatest Of All Time”, for Father’s Day and 6 months. I wanted to share my gratitude. I love and miss you every day.
Losing a parent has been the most difficult and trying time of my entire life. In the past when I felt confused I often would turn to words- poems, songs, short essays, or books. I had been searching for a poem to honor my dad and read at his service that I felt truly encompassed our relationship and I was struggling. I wrote this poem at a time in my life when I felt like there weren’t any words out there to accurately symbolize the loss I felt.
The Greatest Of All Time
I’ll always remember your smile as bright as the sun,
and laughing about how I was daughter number 1.
I’m thankful that I get to call you mine.
You truly are the greatest dad of all time.
I’m so grateful for our sense of humor,
and how you taught me to be a trooper.
Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee.
Your strength was beyond that of Muhammad Ali.
And just like Ali,
you continued to fight.
Which is why in so many ways you are..
“The Greatest Of All Time.”
“And just like our heavenly father,
He’s a guardian and a guide,
Someone that we can count on,
to be always on our side.”
